Geology 1: Earthquakes & Volcanoes
Unit Abstract
In this unit, we will be answering the essential question: how do the continents move side to side. As such, we will examine Wegeners theory of Continental Drift and its fallacies. This begins our quest to answer the same question that Wegener asked - how do the continents move side to side - but more importantly, how will our own hypotheses explain how mountains form, what causes earthquakes to happen, how & why do volcanoes form, how are trenches and mid ocean ridges created.
In this unit, you will formulate your own hypothesis and develop your own lab to help explore and answer these questions and report them to the scientific community of the classroom.

Helpful websites:
- Volcanoes for kids by Discovery, helps kids understand the three basic types of volcanoes and why they form the way they do.
- Plate Tectonic animations, by PBS, help to show students how plates move across the surface of the earth.
- This Phet website is a little more advanced. Students can explore how different crusts interact with each other and what formations they build.
